Native americans

In august 1806 Lewis & Clark was in the Washington State and they contacted with some tribes living  there.
Cayuse was a language isolate (a language unrelated to any other known living language) once spoken in the northwest United States. Though the Cayuse people still live on combined reservations in Oregon and Washington state, their native language has not been spoken since the 19th century. Some Cayuse Indians still speak Nez Perce, the language of a neighboring tribe with whom many of them took shelter in the 1800's. The Cayuse language itself has left few traces. It was once said to be related to Molalla, but this was apparently just a rumor retold as fact; the records that remain of the language do not seem to have anything in common with Molalla or the Sahaptin languages at all.
There are actually two distinct Chehalis languages, Upper Chehalis and Lower Chehalis. These two Salishan languages of Washington State are about as different from each other as English and German. Today only a few semi-fluent speakers of either language remain. Since the Lower Chehalis people are working to merge their language with the neighboring Quinault language, it is usually Upper Chehalis that is referred to by the name Chehalis today.
Yakama is a Penutian language of the Western Plateau. It is spoken natively by only a few dozen Yakama and Klickitat elders there, but many Yakama people are moderately fluent in the language and there is an active language revitalization program underway to teach it to the children. Some linguists consider Yakama to be one dialect of a single Sahaptin language, and others consider it to be one of three or four distinct Sahaptin languages. Yakama and Klickitat speakers have some difficulty understanding Umatilla or Walla Walla speakers, but they are similar enough that speakers can usually all communicate relatively well.
